One day District Level Workshop on Scientific Coconut Cultivation/Technology/Value addition was conducted at KVK Chandel today. The programme was organised by Coconut Development Board, Regional Office, Guwahati, Assam and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chandel. The programme was attended by Shri Krishna Kumar, IAS, Dy. Commissioner, Chandel as Chief Guest; Smt. Ts. Gladny Monsang, DAO – Chandel & Shri L. Mohori Singh, DO Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Chandel as Guest of Honour; Dr. N. Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR – Manipur Centre as Functional President and Shri Lunghar Obed, Director, Coconut Development Board, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, Regional Office, Guwahati as Special Guest. Shri Krishna Kumar, IAS was delighted to note that coconut workshop is organised in the district for the first time. He hopes the outcome of the workshop will be productive and beneficial for the farmers of the district. L. Mohori Singh assured the interested farmers in coconut cultivation to approach the horticulture department for necessary assistant. Smt. Ts. Gladny Monsang opined that suitable cultivation for coconut will be in Moreh and New Samtal area of Khengjoy block and also instilled the farmers of Chandel for cultivation of coconut as the climate is warmer and to adapt climate change and doubling their income. Dr. N. Prakash also highlighted that Chandel climate will be suitable for coconut cultivation as it becomes warmer due to climate change. He also said that cultivation of coconut will sustain their income in the long term and exhorted entrepreneurship development in coconut cultivation which will be beneficial for the farmer. Shri Lunghar Obed informed the farmers that coconut is costly in North East India as coconut production is taken up in Assam and Tripura only. He highlighted that coconut is mostly used for religious purpose and is highly demanded and said that it is also nutrient supplement for healthy living and possessed medicinal values. He added that value addition of coconut will be profitable for women entrepreneurs and SHGs and also shared the schemes available in Coconut Development Board for plantation of Coconut to the farmers. The welcome and keynote address was given by Dr. Deepak Singh, Head and Sr. Scientist. In the technical session, Dr. Chongtham Tania, Scientist (Horticulture), ICAR – Manipur Centre lectured on the topic Scientific Cultivation of Coconut and thereafter interaction programme was conducted between the farmers and the experts. The Workshop was attended by staff of KVK Chandel and 62 farmers from Moreh, New Samtal, Tengnoupal area and surrounding villages of District Head Quarter.
